Sunday Graduation Day

4 Aug

This should have been the first post of camp. It was Sunday the 7th – before the excursion to the airport.

Sorianyi, Rous, and May Lobi graduated from a technical high school, challenging to get in and challenging to graduate from! The students learn job skills that qualify them for work right out of high school – for example: electrical, electro-mechanical, information systems, agriculture, nutrition.

We are so proud that they, with the Carmelite Sisters’ love and support, bucked a powerful trend in the Dominican Republic: one in four women between 20 and 49 years old has had a child before turning 18 and almost half of them had a child before 20. With no childcare or support, fewer than 50% of teen moms graduate from high school, perpetuating their poverty. Within the country, Azua has the highest rate of teen pregnancy. We do see it wherever we go in the region.

Bonus: Katy also graduated even though she returned to her family during COVID. Her sister Yoshemel, is also living with her family and is starting her freshman year of high school this fall.

Evelyn, who graduated from the home and is now a nurse, and a friend came to celebrate Mary Lovi’s accomplishment. Mary Lovi joined camp as a 4 year old.

Sorianyi’s father and brother were so proud of her! Meeting these good people who love her is such a rare privilege.

Rous’s family: Jennifer, her mom, and Genesis who will be a Junior this fall.

Mary Lovi with her best friend and a favorite teacher. Teachers are special everywhere!
